Thanksgiving Buggers

Korea is celebrating one of its anticipated holidays from today until Monday. Chuseok or Hangawi is Korean’s very own version of the American Thanksgiving, and this is most emphasized by the time that these Koreans set to visit their ancestral hometowns and feast on the abundant harvest with the family.

As for new expats like me, with just a little over a month of stay here, I had to suffice myself with the goodies that the company gave each employee for the holiday—- a box full of ORION chips and cookies and biscuits to feel the spirit of the occasion. I have no family here to celebrate the holiday with.

As early as lunch time yesterday, a colleague had left the office to avoid the traffic that becomes so apparent whenever the occasion comes, for he lives a bit far from our office in Seoul. Came four o’ clock in the afternoon and people were already so lax. And that was just about the same time I got my second research assignment. Boohoo. All about frontier markets. Geez. Talk about timing. Anyway, the same man who gave me the take-home work had been the same guy who said I can call it a day as early as five o’ clock. By the time six o’ clock came, it was just me left. So off I fled! Teehee.

As for today, well... I already did laundry, and so far, I have done nothing but get myself so busy with my laptop. There are a myriad of things that anyone can do anyway with the internet. Yes Ella, get yourself busy.

There sure are a lot of things bugging my head now, from things I am dealing with in my new life and work here, to things I still cannot back off at home. They’re actually things that can be resolved anyway, had I truly known how to. There have been temporary remedies—- from deliberate pre-occupation (here) to sudden casualness despite the repressed feelings (there). But I don't know how long these could cover up for the real problem. Nah, I could just hope somebody actually got what I said.

Life is sure giving me one hell of a challenge. And holidays like these when I have nothing much to do-- it's giving me the unfortunate time to perform nostalgic thinking. Which is bad for my health! My mental health. Haha.
